Upper Hutt Station pedestrian accessway mural coming
Upper Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council are collaborating to improve the commuter experience at Upper Hutt Station’s underground pedestrian accessway.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 11 AUG 2017—Greater Wellington Regional Council’s new 94-space, free commuter parking on Goodshed Rd has seen an increase in commuters using Upper Hutt Station’s underground accessway as they make their morning commute.
Upper Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council have been working together to improve the area, upgrading the accessway steps, CCTV cameras, and lighting.
In July, contractors began working in the space to prepare the walls for the installation of a new mural for the area. Hutt Valley artist, Chimp will begin work to install a vibrant mural in the space in the coming months.
“This collaborative work by Upper Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council is exciting. The commuter experience will be enhanced, and our city’s gateway will be vibrant and unique,” says Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy.
Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Sustainable Transport Chair, Barbara Donaldson says: “I’m looking forward to seeing something cool and colourful for Upper Hutt commuters for when they begin and finish their daily commute.”
The mural’s design has been informed by Upper Hutt’s city vision, ‘Life. Leisure. Live it!’ along with feedback from resident surveys and Upper Hutt’sPainted Environment mural projects which have been installed across the city over the past 18 months. The mural will showcase Upper Hutt’s natural beauty and celebrate the city’s uniqueness.
“We’re asking commuters using the space to be mindful over the coming months because contractors and equipment, paint fumes, and/or reduced access may be present at any time,” says Council’s Community Development Advisor, Denise Johnson. “Contractors have agreed to minimise commuter inconvenience as much as possible.”
