"Update on Wellsford crash"
The driver of a motor vehicle has died, and a second man was taken to hospital, following a crash in Wellsford, Auckland this afternoon.
The crash happened on Whangaripo Valley Road shortly after 4pm.
Following a positive test for alcohol, the driver of the vehicle fled from police in his vehicle.
He crashed his car a short time later and died at the scene.
The passenger was airlifted to Auckland Hospital.
The Serious Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.
Due to the crash, there are cordons in place at Whangaripo Valley Road and Rustybrook Road and Whangaripo Valley Road and Wayby Valley Road.
Cordons are expected to be in place for some time while police examine the scene.
