The Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust (the Trust) believe their proposal to Tasman District Council (TDC) to
purchase the Takaka grandstand and keep it in place involves no extra cost to council.
In the proposal, submitted by the trust this week, one option is for TDC to make their demolition budget over to the
Trust. Even careful removal of the squash court will be much cheaper than demolition of both structures.
TDC will consider the proposal at the Full Council Meeting of 27th July.
The Trust has skilled sponsors from the community including builders, engineers, contractors and legal support. They say
it makes sense to demolish the adjacent old squash court in such a manner that the materials could be recycled. The
Trust believes they can accomplish the demolition with the only cost being that to remove the parts of the cladding that
contain asbestos.
"We have a professional engineer's report that states “there is no legal requirement to strengthen this building” and we
have no reason to disbelieve this. This all could happen very quickly - within three months – and both the grandstand
and the new facility could then stand side by side fully used by all" says Trustee Jill Pearson.
