Christchurch hospitality impresses yachting heroes
Thursday 13 July 2017
Emirates Team New Zealand was ‘humbled’ by the response from Christchurch residents and businesses during their time in
the city.
Team members were overwhelmed with the support shown by the city from their arrival to 300 cheering fans at the airport
on Tuesday night, to the thousands who showed their support at the parade on the coldest day of the year in
Christchurch.
The team was hosted for dinner in the city by Tannery brewery Cassels and Sons and warmed up after the parade at Peppers
Restaurant at Clearwater Resort. The newly reopened Crowne Plaza Hotel on Colombo Street provided the team’s
accommodation.
At the end of the parade CEO Grant Dalton thanked Cantabrians for their hospitality and said how impressed he was with
the thoughtfulness that had gone into planning every little detail, from warm gloves from Untouched World to gift bags
of local Canterbury products awaiting team members in their hotel rooms.
ChristchurchNZ Chief Executive Tom Hooper reiterated the team’s thanks.
“The city has really done us proud. In a very short space of time we have come together and delivered a very memorable
event. The response from the public and business has been fantastic,” Tom said.
“Yesterday saw large numbers of volunteers out in the cold for quite a while - setting up, enjoying the festivities and
then cleaning up - but it was all done with a smile on their faces, so thank you to everyone for your generosity and
hospitality.”
