Congratulations to Emirates Team New Zealand for socking it to Oracle and reclaiming the America's Cup.
It was high spirits at the Thames-Coromandel District Council meeting today with a round of applause from Councillors,
Council staff and those in the public gallery, for the Kiwi's 7-1 triumph over Oracle Team USA in Bermuda earlier today.
"Here in Thames-Coromandel we're echoing what the rest of the country is saying today - that we're really proud of Team
New Zealand's achievement and proud to be a Kiwi," says Thames-Coromandel Mayor Sandra Goudie.
Our District is also part of the America's Cup history, when back in 1988 and in 1992 the Mercury Bay Boating Club in
Whitianga challenged the might of yachting nemesis Dennis Conner and the San Diego Yacht Club.
"We’re realistic that we won't be hosting an America's Cup in Whitianga, but we'll be looking at ways our District can
get involved if a decision is made to hold the next challenge here in New Zealand in 2021," says Mayor Sandra.
"For today we're just happy to show our support to Emirates Team New Zealand by pulling on those lucky red socks and
saying good on you boys," says Mayor Sandra.
(Note: Red socks have become synonymous with getting behind Team NZ for America's Cup campaigns following revelations by
Team NZ skipper Peter Blake that he wore his lucky red socks in 1995 on "Black Magic to defeat US defender Stars and
Stripes ."
