Mayoral earthquake funds distribution underway

Mayoral earthquake funds distribution underway

Funds from the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Fund are being distributed this week, in time for Christmas.

$95,500 was donated to the fund, including a generous $50,000 from the Rata Foundation.

Dean Heiford, Marlborough Recovery Manager says 34 families and individuals requested assistance.

“The Fund committee met yesterday and we’ve allocated $11,000 in hardship grants for families and individuals, prior to Christmas.

“Some families are suffering and it’s great that we have been able to make a difference so soon after the quake and before those Christmas bills come in.

“Priority has been given to applicants needing help with the essentials for daily life, those who are uninsured or whose costs are not covered by insurance, or those who face particular financial burdens due to the earthquake.”

A second round of applications to the fund will be considered early in the New Year, he said.

ENDS.
