Celebrating the benefits of the Northwestern Cycleway

Cyclists and communities have been celebrating the success and benefits of the Northwestern Cycleway today.

The NZ Transport Agency says a community day held on a section of the cycleway that runs through the UNITEC campus has been a great opportunity to share the excitement about the cycleway improvements with the people who use it.

The 13km long Northwestern Cycleway which runs alongside the Northwestern Motorway between the CBD and Lincoln Road in the west, has been upgraded as part of construction and improvements for the $2.4b Western Ring Route, one of the Government’s Roads of National Significance.

“By widening and raising the cycleway we have created an almost entirely off-road path which provides a safe commuting connection between the city and western suburbs and helps cyclists, runners and walkers avoid busy roads,” says Ernst Zollner the Transport Agency’s Auckland Regional Director.

“Regular users of the cycleway have remained very loyal to the route, continuing to use it patiently through the construction work, and we really wanted to thank them for that patience and celebrate the great progress we’ve made with them.”

The remaining sections of the cycleway will be completed following the opening of the Waterview Tunnel early next year and the State Highway 16 Lincoln to Westgate project which is due to be finished in 2019.
