Spring Weather Comes into Play

An active front passed over the North Island this morning. Thunderstorms affected Northland and Auckland causing power outages. The already saturated conditions in most northern parts of the country have led to localised flooding and slips when further significant rain occurred over the weekend.

People will be hoping for a break in the wet weather, after a month of higher than average rainfalls experienced by many North Island areas. “A change in weather patterns is expected this week following the stable period of moist northeasterlies, but dry conditions are not likely over the country” said MetService Meteorologist Derek Holland.

Faster moving trough and lows are forecast to cross the country from the west during the week, in line with Spring weather. These bring frontal bands with further showers or rain, and possible heavy falls, though they may be of a shorter duration than experienced recently. “A change to much windier conditions over the country, with gale at times in many places, will certainly be noticed” added Derek Holland.

This predominant westerly flow will bring some relief to eastern areas that have collected the rain over the past week or so. In Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, there is some possibility of some dryer intervals with longer sunny spells. “After the cloudy conditions for the past period, a few warmer sunshine breaks will be welcome there,” commented Derek Holland.
