A man is in a critical but stable condition in Wellington Hospital after being found with six stab wounds at a 21st birthday party in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae.
Police were called to address on Waddington Drive just before 02.30am to a report of fighting in the street, possibly involving 50 people.
Emergency service workers were put in unnecessary danger when an attending ambulance was pelted with bottles.
A man has been arrested for assault and is cooperating with Police.
A further eight arrests were made for disorder and obstruction type offences.
