TASTEFULLY YOURS - THE ART OF FOOD IN PARNELL
Have your culinary curiosities elevated, your taste buds salivating and your experience with professional waiters raised to another level! From 8-16 October Parnell is combining its love affair with the culinary and the artistic to bring to you something a little bit ‘Parnell’ different with the Art of Food.
Hospitality and art galleries in Parnell will showcase their best; from fine dining to the delectable diversity of ethnic menus, wine tastings and cooking classes to inspiring visual displays in art galleries, ending in a grand finale with the return of the Parnell Waiters’ Race on the 16th October. With the most galleries on one street in Auckland, Parnell Artweek offers a variety of free art exhibitions and art-related events to feed the soul and nourish the mind. Many of the galleries will showcase a diverse range of ‘food’ related artworks and talks.
Launching Artweek in Parnell as part of the Art of Food, at 11am on the 8th October, Parnell Gallery invites you hear about the collaboration between artist Tiffany Singh & Chef Ed Verner from Pasture, in a pastorally inspired talk, ‘Pasture to Paper’.
Art meets Japanese cooking with Rainbow dumpling making classes at Sachie’s Kitchen in St Georges Bay Road, or you can get your ‘Sugar Rush’ at Black Door Gallery with a delectable table setting for an extravagant High Tea; view Marian Fountain’s iconic sculpture, Pea Pod at Artis Gallery or engage with a group exhibition in The Art of Food at Jonathan Grant Gallery. Studio Carolina Izzo will demonstrate the techniques involved in the age-old craft of gold leafing, including food items. Many of the exhibitions continue for the whole week, interspersed with wine tastings and other foodie delights.
On the 15th October, design students Sophie An and Barbara Gray host an interactive display called ‘Seed Bomb’ and you can learn the secrets of fresh pasta making.
Sunday 16th ends on a high note with the Parnell Waiters Race which kicks off at 11.00am in Heard Park, as a challenge to all Auckland restaurants to put their best feet forward in a series of activities that will test agility, skill, professionalism and speed with the coveted prize the use of a Renault Captur for 1 year for the winning waiter! Take your photo with the 11metre Eiffel Tower in Heard Park on Parnell Road and go in the draw to win a weekend in NZ’s French capital – Akaroa. Join us and be prepared to be have fun and enjoy the entertainment, not least of which will be an after party at 46 & York with their celebrated Sunday live music sessions.
