Temperatures rebound after cold snap

Temperatures across New Zealand are returning to normal this week, after last week’s cold snap. The cold southerly flow that brought gale force winds and snow to low levels late last week has been replaced by a ridge of high pressure this weekend, bringing fine weather to most of the country. On Saturday, Christchurch and Wellington both reached double digits for the first time since Wednesday. “Most places will get daytime highs in the teens today and throughout this week, but the combination of clear skies and light winds will make for a chilly start in some areas on Monday morning,” commented MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

The ridge of high pressure over New Zealand drifts north on Monday allowing a front to move onto the South Island, bringing a period of rain to the west and south of the Island. The front is also expected to bring showers to parts of the North Island from Tuesday, mainly in western areas. On Friday, a strong northerly flow develops over the country, spreading rain to most places.
