Chamber welcomes resilience report
Wellington Chamber of Commerce welcomes the report of the Resilient Wellington group which identifies four major “shocks” that pose significant threats to the city.
Chief Executive John Milford said business believes that resilience must be the key point of planning for any city, and the Chamber is pleased the council is prioritising it.
“It’s good these issues have been identified early so they can be discussed.
“The key then is what we do around further planning our preparedness for a big earthquake, storms and rising sea levels, a massive economic downturn, and an Auckland-style housing crisis. Each of these has the potential for massive disruption for a long period of time.
“We also need to look at how much we are willing and able to spend on getting prepared.
“We will get a steer on some of those issues when councillors consider the report tomorrow.”
John Milford is a member of the Resilient Wellington group, which comprises City Council staff, business people, utility providers, scientists, academics, health workers and volunteers from across the region. It is part of a global network of 100 cities around the world which are working to share knowledge that will protect them from physical, social, and economic disasters.
