Sevens news great for city, says Chamber
The decision to keep the Sevens in Wellington for at least three more years is great news, says Chamber Chief Executive John Milford.
“We feared we might lose it, but this is great news.
“But now the hard work begins to ensure we keep the event even further into the future.
“It's now up to New Zealand Rugby and the organisers to look at ways to get the crowds back so it stays in the capital. I believe the council has to continue playing a part as well, and they all need to sit down to refine and enhance the model.
“It could be that they take a close look at what is making the London, Cape Town, Sydney and Las Vegas legs of the tournament so popular in recent times and why Hong Kong remains a sell-out year after year.
“Maybe they need to look at who they want to attract, the pricing, and even at building other events around the tournament weekend that compliment it and bring more people into the city.”
