Upper Hutt’s latest picturesque pedestrian accessway
Upper Hutt City Council, Fraser Crescent School, and local artist Daniel Mills work collaboratively to showcase Upper
Hutt’s natural beauty in a suburban pedestrian accessway.
The completed mural between Fraser and Bonnie Glen Crescents brings a colourful change to the accessway.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 07 JAN 2016—Upper Hutt City Council, local artist Daniel Mills, and students from Fraser
Crescent School have transformed the Fraser Crescent to Bonnie Glen Crescent pedestrian accessway by installing a mural
which depicts Upper Hutt’s scenic playground by day and night.
Fraser Crescent School students first met with Daniel Mills in late October to come up with the design concept for the
space, Upper Hutt’s natural assets rivers, mountains and outdoor pursuits featured highly in their sketches. Daniel
Mills took their concepts and wove them together to create a day/night scene for the space. Every student involved in
the design concept workshop has a piece of their original artwork featured in the final design.
“Research tells us that community engagement in the planning and installation of murals translates to resident ownership
and pride in the area. We anticipate that these young people, their family, whanau and residents in the local community
will become guardians of the space because of the involvement of local school children from the beginning of the
project. We hope through investment in our young people today that we will eliminate a graffiti vandalism problem which
has previously existed in the accessway,” says Council’s Director of Community Services, Mike Ryan.
Fraser Crescent students met again with Daniel Mills on 1 December to work alongside him and hone their artistic skills
under his tutelage. Students each worked on sections which featured their original artworks and Daniel Mills completed
the final touches just in time for the new year. The artwork is another gem in Upper Hutt’s crown, a painted environment
which depicts a picturesque Upper Hutt playground.
The accessway and mural can be accessed via Fraser Crescent or Bonnie Glen Crescent.
“It is a veritable feast-for-the-eyes and it should feature highly on your list of things to see and do in Upper Hutt
this summer,” says Council Officer, Denise Johnson.
