Belongings Stolen from Far North Lifeguards

The personal belongings of two surf lifeguards on patrol at a busy far north beach were stolen on Sunday while they were checking a struggling kayaker was safe.

Two mobile phones were stolen at around midday, while two of the three Lifeguards on patrol at Ahipara headed out with an IRB to assist the man.

Chairman of Far North Surf Rescue club, David Ross was upset to hear of the theft. “These people are looking after us, why can’t we look after them?” he says.

“This is the first time anything like this has occurred but it only takes a few people to ruin it for everyone.

“The lifeguards are there to keep the beaches safe and shouldn’t have to worry about having their personal items being stolen. Items such as personal phones are sometimes the only way our young guards can keep in contact with family and friends while working away from home over the summer.

“We urge people to think about the implications this has on the Lifeguards who patrol the beaches day in and day out.”

Ahipara beach does not have club rooms so each day a gazebo is set up each day for first aid equipment and as a place for the Lifeguards to leave their belongings while they are on patrol.

Police are investigating the incident but have yet to find any leads. If any members of the public have any information about the incident they are encouraged to contact local police.
