Petone-Ngauranga path a triple win, says Chamber
The announcement by NZ Transport Agency of a seaside cycling and walking path linking Wellington and the Hutt Valley will bring a triple benefit to the region, says Wellington Chamber of Commerce.
Chief Executive John Milford said
NZTA was to be congratulated for their foresight with the
project.
“Choosing a higher-cost option is a
bold move, but in my view the benefits to the region will
make it money well invested.
“Putting the
pathway on the sea side of the rail line will affectively
introduce a new tourist attraction to the city – a
cycleway and walkway on the very edge of the best harbour in
New Zealand. This will almost complete the sea-edge
experience around the harbour.
“It’s also a
great move from a road safety point of view, because it will
take cyclists well away from the traffic on the current
narrow highway.
“From a transport-resilience
point of view, the pathway will help to future-proof the
rail line by giving it much greater protection from the sea
than it has ever had. The recent weather events over the
past few years has shown just how critical our regional
infrastructure is, and the importance of strengthening our
network.”
