Headliners revealed for Tauranga’s New Year’s Eve celebration
Trinity Roots will headline this summer’s New Year’s Eve celebrations at Mount Maunganui providing an unforgettable start to 2016.
The performance is part of Tauranga City Council’s New Year’s Eve programme, which also includes a mix of live performance, family-friendly entertainment, fireworks and more, all happening in a liquor-free and vehicle-free zone around Mount Main Beach
Mayor Stuart Crosby said New Year’s Eve in Tauranga was a special event for the city and this year’s celebration would have something for everyone.
“It’s easy to see why Tauranga’s beaches have been voted the best in New Zealand, proving popular for families and friends to welcome in the new year” Mr Crosby said.
“Tauranga City Council is proud to bring this high-class event to Tauranga, which enhances the already vibrant summer event scene.
“Our events team is working hard to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe environment for an unforgettable start to the new year.”
Strategic and City Events Manager Pip Loader said the New Year’s Eve celebration would include three performance areas with a variety of entertainment to suit everybody.
“We are delighted to bring Kiwi platinum-selling New Zealand artists Trinity Roots to Tauranga with its unique sound of soul-influenced reggae, along with the irrepressible B2KDA who will kick off the night for us,” she said.
“DJ Lyrakill, one of New Zealand’s most renowned club DJs, will headline on the DJ-only iHeart Radio Beach Stage from 9pm.
“The New Year’s Eve celebration is part of Tauranga City Council’s mysummer programme – a wide range of events and entertainment designed to make this summer a memorable and distinctive one for locals and visitors.
“New Year’s Eve is the major event of the mysummer programme and I have no doubt the range of entertainment on offer will end this year on a high.”
Trinity Roots Drummer Ben Wood said he was looking forward to playing at New Zealand's prime location for New Year’s Eve celebrations and summer holidays.
“With all the holiday makers and party go-ers looking for a good time it's an opportunity for Trinity to be a part of an awesome New Year’s Eve experience, and we want to help make it a memorable one for as many people as possible,” Mr Wood said.
Alex Urlich from B2KDA said playing in Tauranga was always special but it was especially significant this year.
“We have a new member, Joel Shadbolt, who is a born and bred Tauranga native and our MC Paaka Davis has also relocated to Tauranga so we are starting to build up quite a connection to the city.”
In the city centre Council will welcome the new year with fireworks from a barge on Tauranga’s waterfront at the family-friendly time of 9.30pmand again at midnight for those who want to celebrate in the CBD.
Tauranga City Council has launched its mobile-friendly summer webpage, where residents and visitors can find all details of the entire mysummer programme including New Year’s Eve, Christmas around town and helpful information on road closures, liquor-free zones, parking and more.
