The Compost Collective presents the Urban Food Gardens at Wynyard Quarter, 10th-18th October
The Urban Food Gardens at Wynyard Quarter are now in full swing, mid-way through the week-long installation. The event
so far has seen many visitors curious to learn how organic waste reduction and urban gardening are easy lifestyle
choices available to them. “I never knew composting could be made so sexy”, laughed Paul Nicoll from Waterfront Auckland
as he helped with set up.
Through the eye-catching, hands-on displays as well as the friendly and passionate team onsite, many visitors to the
event have been switched
on to how easy it is to turn organic waste, such as gardening and food scraps, into rich compost that can be returned to
the soil. The pop-up, food gardens on display provide inspiration as to what is possible for any novice gardener to
achieve even within an urban context.
Over the past weekend free workshops were open to the public including bokashi composting, hot composting and worm
farming. The EcoMatters team had a stall set up to make origami seedling pots that engaged the young and old alike
and proved very popular.
During the working week a workshop that gives attendees a general introduction to composting will be on at midday each
day. Pop down during your lunch break and you can to add any of your lunch leftovers to the compost on display.
This weekend there will be many more engaging gardening demonstrations and composting workshops worth attending. This
Sunday at 1pm The Roots Creative Entrepreneurs will be hosting a free Hanging Gardens workshop aimed at encouraging
children into upcycling and gardening.
