National Open Day a chance to peek behind the scenes at Christchurch Central Police Station
If you missed out on our Open Day last year or enjoyed it so much you want to come back for another visit lock in a
family outing to Christchurch Central Police Station this coming Sunday (18 October 2015) for the 2015 Police National
Open Day.
District Commander, Superintendent John Price, says the Open day is a chance for people to visit Police Stations in the
12 Districts as well as the Royal NZ Police College in Wellington and find out more about the tools and methods are used
to prevent crime and reduce offending in modern Policing.
“Policing has changed significantly over recent years but the fundamental principles underpinning it are as strong as
ever. Everyone in our community has a right to be safe and feel safe whether they are at home, at work or at play and
the open day is a great opportunity to see what we are doing in Canterbury to achieve this.”
The Open Day will run from 10am until 2pm on Sunday (18 October 2015) with activities and competitions planned for all
age groups and the staff café will be open to the public for lunch and snacks. There will be an opportunity to meet some
of our Police Dogs and Handlers, take the Police Physical Competency Challenge and check out the custody suite, Southern
Communications 111 call centre, District Command Centre and crime cameras.
Christchurch Central Police Station will open for business as usual while the Open Day is on.
Canterbury Police Open Day coordinator, Senior Sergeant John Robinson, says there will be lots of hands-on activities
running throughout the Open Day. “This is a unique opportunity to get a close-up look at what modern day policing is all
about".
"Some of our police dogs will be on ‘paw’ to meet you, including some of our puppies if they behave, and there will be
police cars to sit in, police bikes to sit on, some members of AOS will be around and our forensic specialists will be
showing people what they do. You can also find out more about our other specialist groups like search and rescue, police
negotiators, commercial vehicles, crash investigators to name a few.”
Some of the partner agencies Police work with will also have displays at the Open Day including the Christchurch Justice
and Emergency Precinct and Department of Corrections.
“Come and join un on Sunday and chat with some of our police officers about what they do. We’ll also have recruitment
information and advice for those that want to join Police.”
