Arrest made in historic sexual offences case
Police are investigating a number of historic sexual offences that occurred from 1993 through to 2012 in Hawera, but also primarily in Otorohanga and Te Awamutu. A 36 year old Hawera male was arrested today (October 6) for a significant number of sexual offences over a period of nearly 20 years.
The majority of the offending occurred in the Waikato area in the 1990’s. Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Matuku said “There are at least 10 victims known to Police.
They include male and female victims, some of whom were family members”.
Matuku said “The victims we know of are relieved that this male is being held to account for his actions, which have had a devastating effect on many of them”. Police, Victim Support and Child Youth and Family are continuing to work closely with the victims and their families.
The male is due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court on Wednesday 7 October 2015. Police want to speak with anyone that may have also been a victim or think they may be able to assist with the investigation which is ongoing. Anyone wishing to contact the Police should ring their local Police station or contact the Taranaki CIB on 06 7599 456.
