Kaikoura, State Highway 1, Ohau Point road repairs begin
The NZ Transport Agency starts five weeks of road repairs just south of Ohau Point, Kaikoura, from today (Monday, 3
August). Ohau Point is known for its seal colony and is about 25 km north of the township.
The storm surges and high seas breaking over the road a couple of months ago caused a temporary road closure at the
time. Rocks were thrown up from the sea onto the road and the edge of the state highway has been eroded and undermined
over a 50 metre section.
The work will take about five weeks, through August.
It will require a lane closure with traffic lights during the days, Monday to Friday 7am – 6pm. “Please take care around
the Downer contractors working on the site,” said the Transport Agency’s Journey Manager Lee Wright. “They all want to
get home safely at night also.”
The state highway will be back to two lane traffic through this section during weekday nights and weekends, but at slow
speeds, 30kph.
“We apologise for any disruptions to road users and appreciate drivers’ patience while this work is being done,” said Ms
Wright.
