Flood payment scam warning

Dunedin (Friday, 12 June, 2015) – The Dunedin City Council is warning people about hoax emails claiming they are trying to pay funds into their accounts for slip damage after last week’s The email sent this morning urges people to open an attached file to access payment details of money paid into their bank accounts.

The email addressed re:Slips, states –

“Kia Ora, This is with reference to the payment we made to your account and this is the second time i am contacting you on this issue without a single response from you!

“For easy reference, we are attaching scan copies of the payment details is also attached in a zip folder. Kindly extract the payment details from the zip folder to your desktop and open to view the details as you may not be able to view it from the zip folder “Please don't forget to get back to me after collecting the money so i can tell you what to do.

DCC Business Information technicians say the zip folder is likely to be a Trojan containing malware which could let a virus, worm or spyware into a recipient’s computer.

General Manager Services and Development Simon Pickford is asking people not to open the file if they receive it, as it may harm their hard drives.

“We know a number of these emails are circulating and our advice to people is to ignore them and delete them from your inbox. Certainly do not follow their instructions."
