DCC to fund CBD cardboard collection

Dunedin (22 December 2014) – The Dunedin City Council has stepped in to fund the cardboard collection service provided in the CBD as the present contractor has chosen to cease the service.

The collection service has been run twice weekly for the last eight years by the contractor, but is no longer economically viable for him to manage. The DCC has decided to fund the collection service for the rest of the 2014/15 financial year.

“Until now the service was being run free of charge by the existing contractor. It was not a council provided service. We’ve stepped in to provide what is needed to ensure the cardboard from the CBD is collected and recycled,” says DCC General Manager Infrastructure and Networks, Tony Avery.

There will be no interruption to the cardboard service collection on Mondays and Thursdays. It will be a seamless transfer from the current contractor to the DCC’s contractor who already collects the rubbish and recycling from the street litter bins and public recycling stations.

In the longer term the Council will consider a proposal for CBD recycling services as part of the 2015/16 Annual Plan process.

“From our consultation about recycling carried out earlier this year with CBD residents and businesses we recognise the value of this service to those located in the CBD and to keeping the city looking clean and tidy,” says Mr Avery.
