Giving our kids a Sporting Chance
Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team launches Sporting Chance funding to increase access to sport participation for children and teenagers.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 02 OCT 2014—Activation is excited to launch a new and exciting opportunity to Upper Hutt children. The Sporting Chance fund will contribute to breaking down the financial barrier for families to assist in getting their children involved in sport.
Activation recognises that many children want to play sport, they LOVE playing sport and the benefits that run alongside participating and being involved in sport are significant. This fund aims to help some of those children, where finance is a barrier to participation, to play sport.
Sporting Chance has been successfully delivered by both Sport Otago and Sport Canterbury, where Sport Otago has given over 1,500 children the support to take part in more than 60 sports. Activation has opened the doors to this unique fund for Upper Hutt children between 8 and 18 years of age.
Activation Team Leader, Ellie Davidson has seen many kids participate in sport over the years, but has also noticed there is that ‘missed opportunity’ for some who can’t play due to financial barriers. The fund will assist in paying for subs, equipment or uniform.
“This fund aims to allow those kids the opportunity to play sport when their families may have difficulty to support them financially to play,” says Miss Davidson.
Applications to Sporting Chance support must be made through an official application form available on the Activation website, at local schools, sports clubs, and at H2O Xtream reception. Applications must also be completed with the assistance of two referees at the applicant’s school or support agency, and must be signed by the applicant’s parent or guardian and the referees before being returned to Activation.
The first round of Sporting Chance funding is now open for applications and will close on Friday 14 November, at 4.00 pm. For further information on the Sporting Chance fund, including the application form, please visit: www.activation.org.nz
