Heritage Festival commemorates WW1
This year Auckland Heritage Festival commemorates the centenary of the First World War with the theme ‘courage has many resting places’.
Mayor Len Brown says this year is no ordinary year for the festival.
“As we acknowledge the start of a war that changed our city and our country forever, it is important to remember the sacrifice made by past Aucklanders – and the impact it had on their families and communities,” he says.
“With more than 200 low-cost or free events, as always the festival is a great opportunity for the whole family to learn about Auckland’s history,” says Mr Brown.
The festival runs through the school holidays from 27 September to 12 October, starting with a public open day at Queens Wharf.
Kicking off the day is a parade featuring the Royal New Zealand Artillery Band, joined by serving troops, cadet forces and vintage military vehicles.
Take in exhibits, displays and other entertainment, including an RNZ Artillery Band concert, inside Shed 10 to experience a glimpse of what life was like during the war years.
The frigate HMNZS Wellington will be berthed alongside the wharf during the tribute to the Kiwis who departed from Queens Wharf on their way to join the war effort.
