Ongohi Bridge opens ahead of time and under budget
Twelve weeks to the day of the storm that caused its collapse, the Ongohi Bridge opened to traffic.
For the past twelve weeks, residents of Fletcher Bay and Port Jackson have been utilising a temporary ford constructed
by Transfield Services.
"The patience and co-operation of Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay Road residents who had to deal with not only devastation
to their own properties but also disruptions to vehicle access, was a key contributor to the success of the project,"
said Roading Manager, Matt Busch.
By reusing existing bridge components that were still structurally sound and materials onsite including rock that were
bought down river by the storm, the bridge was constructed in half the original expected timeframe and at half the cost.
"The time and cost savings were due to a partnering approach between TCDC, Opus International Consultants Ltd, HEB
Construction Ltd (for bridge construction) and Transfield Services Ltd (for ensuring vehicle access via temporary ford
and road reinstatement once the bridge was completed) and Waikato Regional Council (WRC) for their advice regarding
resource consent requirements," Mr Busch added.
