A Good Sort In More Ways Than One
When you arrive at the Bookarama being run by the Christchurch West Rotary Club at the Addington Racecourse, in a couple
of weeks time, the first thing you will notice is a busy group of people browsing through books in the Children’s
Section. This has proven to be one of the most popular parts of Bookarama and all of the credit for this goes to Jill,
our organiser Colin Garrett’s wife. For the last 3 years she has spent countless hours sorting, patching, cleaning and
presenting the books – always with the new owners in mind.
As Jill says, “Books are like good friends. They need to be looked after. Some of the books that come in to Bookarama,
are a bit tired when they first arrive. With a little tender care they have life again. They look and smell good and are
ready to be loved by another generation of readers.”
For Jill raising money this way for local charities is a labour of love and a natural extension of the great work she
does during the year with young Mums, Dads and even grandparents, helping them to prepare their children for school.
Jill currently has nearly forty families in her free “Kids Under Construction” programme, and pledges, God willing, to
walk the journey with them preferably from conception until the children begin school.
The Bookarama at the Addington Raceway Stables is on Friday 19 September 5pm to 8 pm, Saturday 21 September 9am to 5pm
