Call for local bakers to help animals
So you think you can bake? Wellington SPCA is looking for cupcake cooks for their annual fundraiser and businesses who
are keen to eat sweet treats for the animals.
Last year Cupcake Day raised over $30,000 for Wellington SPCA with every cent going towards helping animals within the
Wellington community.
Wellington SPCA Chief Executive Officer Iain Torrance says this year the organisation is looking for cupcake cooks of
all ages and baking levels to take part on Monday, 25 August.
“It really doesn’t matter about the level of your baking skills. Cupcakes are easy enough for non-bakers to whip up and
to make and it is a fun and easy way to make a real difference to the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned animals
that need our help.”
And for those who would rather eat the products than bake them there is a way to participate.
“This year we’re encouraging Wellington businesses and organisations to pre-order cupcakes from willing bakers and have
them delivered as a delicious morning or afternoon tea shout for staff. It’s about making it easy for businesses and
bakers to get involved,” he says.
One Wellington organisation supporting the cause is Wellington City Council, which is repeating last year’s successful
‘Cupcake Idol’ competition throughout the organisation.
The Council is encouraging eager home bakers among its staff to whip up a batch of cupcakes to be judged by Mayor Celia
Wade-Brown with Wellington SPCA’s Iain Torrance. Remaining cupcakes are sold to colleagues, with last year’s efforts
raising over $400 for the SPCA.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says, “Wellington SPCA is a real success story in their new home – let’s make it even better for
the animals they help! Cupcake Day is a delicious way of raising funds and awareness for this important charity.”
Mr Torrance says that the SPCA does not receive Government funding for its unique charitable services so the money
raised by the community on Cupcake Day will help fund the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of the thousands of
animals in need of our help each year.
Registering is easy, go to www.spcacupcakeday.co.nz and click register. You can also donate to SPCA, pre-order cupcakes, and return your funds via the website.
Iain Torrance and Mayor Wade-Brown will be judging the Council’s ‘Cupcake Idol’ competition at 10.30am, Monday 25 August
at the Wellington Central Library’s staffroom, Victoria Street. Media who would like to attend can contact Phil Reed
from the Mayor’s Office on 801 3119. Yes, there will be animals present!
About Wellington SPCA
Wellington SPCA have been at the forefront of animal welfare across the Greater Wellington Region for 130 years. We
support the whole of the greater Wellington region from our Animal Care, Education and Community Centre in Wellington’s
historic Fever Hospital in Newtown, and our centre in Waikanae, caring for more than 5,000 animals every year and
upholding animal welfare and responsible pet ownership through numerous community initiatives. Despite being the only
charity that is a law enforcement agency, Wellington SPCA receives no direct government funding and therefore achieves
all it does through the generosity of the community.
