Uniquely Hamilton Multimedia Project at Waikato Museum

18 AUGUST 2014

For Immediate Release

A multimedia exhibition about contemporary life in Hamilton developed by Wintec, Massey University and the University of Canterbury will open at Waikato Museum on Saturday 23 August. Survey Hamilton examines Hamilton’s environmental attributes, its economy and people’s sense of home.

Researchers for Survey Hamilton explored new documentary practice and how can it be applied here in Hamilton, New Zealand.Project leader and Wintec School of Media Arts tutor, Joe Citizen says the exhibition features a range of media technologies that include photography, interactive 360° video, gaming and sonic art.

“The exhibition is a contemporary response to a contemporary question – what do we mean by this place called Hamilton? Where are we going? How do talk about ourselves in an era of massive change?”

Wintec ‘s School of Media Arts and Waikato Museum have collaborated on a number of projects involving media, arts and moving image and according to Waikato Museum director Cherie Meecham, the synergies between the both organisations lend themselves well to future projects.

“Arts and education are not only core business for both our organisations, we are passionate about exploring the possibilities of both, so it makes sense we offer an easily accessible venue for this project of special interest to Hamilton people.”

“It’s a tremendously exciting project – everyone involved is a leader in their own field. It’s been a lot of hard work, but the results have been phenomenal and it has evolved into something that’s uniquely Hamilton,” said Citizen.
