“King Tides AKL” will provide a glimpse of how sea level rise could shape the future of Auckland’s coastline
On Wednesday evening (August 13), one of the highest tides of the year (known as King Tides) will hit Auckland’s
coastline, providing a unique opportunity to see how rising sea levels may impact our region in the future.
The King Tides Auckland Initiative (King Tides AKL) encourages people to help document these exceptionally high tides by
photographing their local shorelines – capturing the effects of higher water levels on homes, buildings, walkways, roads
and other built infrastructure, as well as beaches, wetlands and coastal wildlife habitats.
Witness the King Tide this Wednesday at 9:31pm on East coast beaches.
Members of the King Tides AKL team have designated photo and video areas set up at “hot spot” locations around Auckland
where the public can witness the King Tide using our social media platform.
Participants can also attend the King Tides Countdown, where members of the King Tides AKL team will broadcast images of
King Tide hotspots from Auckland’s CBD as we count down to the King Tide at 9:31pm. Also vote for the King Tides AKL
photo competition finalists, and hear from experts from NIWA and Civil Defence.
King Tides Auckland is a community initiative sponsored by Auckland Council, Civil Defence and Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai
Pari and supported by NIWA, Auckland War Memorial Museum, King Tides Project and Tonkin & Taylor, New Zealand Coastal Society and Beca.
