Wellington Community Comes Together to Make a Difference During
Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal

Dreams are wonderful things. But despite what we are led to believe, dreams aren’t free and neither are they always easy to achieve. Lots of dreams have come true this week during the Commonwealth Games, but for kids like Bae from Wellington, overcoming health barriers is the primary focus.

The Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal helps children like eight-year-old Bae by raising money for much needed medical equipment for 10 Children’s Wards & Hospitals across the country, including Wellington Children’s Hospital.

Bae has Bronchiectasis, meaning she has to come into Wellington Children’s Hospital every three months for two weeks at a time, for antibiotics and physio treatment. Bae and her family have been regular users of the equipment funded by past Countdown Kids Hospital Appeals, including cardiac monitors, blood pressure monitors, chair beds, saturation monitors, and a vein finderlight.
Launching at Wellington Children’s Hospital on 8 August, Countdown stores will be working alongside their local children’s wards to host fundraising activities. From selling cheese rolls to hosting cake stalls, hundreds of Countdown and hospital staff will be rallying the Wellington community to support the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal Chairperson, Ruth Krippner, says: “Taking part in local activities is a great way to support the children who need us. As a community, we need to raise as much money as we can to support kids like Bae.”

“We’ve had some incredible feedback from the families who have benefitted from last year’s Appeal and that inspires us to try and raise even more funds this year. We are proud to support the communities we live and work in and are committed to making a real difference to New Zealanders. This is just one of many ways we get involved and do our bit,” she says.

Since 2007, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has raised nearly $1.0 million to help change the lives of sick Kiwi kids at Wellington Children’s Hospital.

Countdown’s support of Wellington Children’s Hospital continues to save lives, says Bill Day, Chair of Wellington Hospitals Foundation, the official charity of Wellington Children’s Hospital. “Knowing that Countdown customers financially support this Appeal ensures that much needed medical equipment is able to be purchased for Wellington Children’s Hospital. This is a fantastic relationship between Countdown, their customers, the community and Wellington Children’s Hospital.
