Mayor welcomes review of train security
Mayor Len Brown says Aucklanders should be reassured by a rigorous assessment of train security which has resulted in an
action plan to enhance safety across the suburban rail network.
The action plan, developed by Auckland Transport, focuses on enhancing platform security and dealing with issues such as
anti-social and disorderly behaviour observed on station platforms before patrons board trains.
CCTV is already installed at every train station and 13 key train stations across the network now have guards on
platforms, but Len Brown says more needs to be done.
“There must be zero tolerance of alcohol, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour that poses a risk to patrons.”
“All Aucklanders, young and old, have a right to feel one hundred per cent safe on our rail network. This action plan is
a significant step towards making that the case.”
A Combined Safer Network Group, formed in May, brings together Auckland Transport, Auckland Council, New Zealand Police
and the rail operator Transdev, who will progress the action plan.
Auckland Transport will implement a number of additional initiatives over coming months.
In the short-term, platform guards will be given specialised training on how to manage security issues.
CCTV coverage on platforms and trains will be increased where needed. An additional five cameras have already been
purchased for the platform security network.
Auckland Transport Chief Operations Officer, Greg Edmonds, says “Since the introduction of guards on platforms in May,
there has already been a decline in security issues on trains and platforms.”
