New shades keeping our roads safe
The communities of Central District can expect to see some new splashes of colour protecting our roads alongside the
regular marked police patrol vehicles.
Today Central District received two of their four new coloured patrol cars (two red and two orange) which will join the
rest of the regular marked Highway Patrol fleet operating across the entire District.
These new highly visible vehicles were trialled during the "Safe Summer 2013/2014" campaign and their purpose is to
increase visibility and road safety awareness.
Officer in charge of Central District Highway Patrol, Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery says the coloured vehicles provide a
powerful visual reminder of the Police presence on our roads and in our communities and generate public discussion of
road safety issues, as agencies work together to drive down deaths and injuries on our roads.
"We take pride in having a highly visible Highway Patrol and Road Policing Group and we are often commented on in a
positive way by drivers and road users about our presence," says Senior Sergeant Burbery.
"Highway Patrol staff operate across the entire Central District and strictly enforce the speed limits and road user
responsibilities.
"These new vehicles will be deployed in a tactical way within the District and motorists driving on our roads can expect
to see them on a regular basis. They also make the point that any vehicle of this colour may be a Police vehicle - in
keeping with our philosophy that you could be stopped anywhere, anytime."
The coloured vehicles enhance the current range of tools and tactics used by Police to reduce speeding, drink driving
and other unsafe behaviour that puts all of us at risk on the roads.
"I also want to remind motorists that while officers are out there keeping our roads safe 24/7, road safety is
everyone's responsibility, and we all have a responsibility to drive safe," says Senior Sergeant Burbery.
