Fatal tree pruning incident in Seddon Street, Fielding

At around 11.45am this morning a male in his 60s was pruning a tree ahead of trying to fell the tree at a friends address in Seddon Street, Fielding. Early indications are that as he has cut a limb of the tree, the safety equipment holding him has been caught and pulled him into the trunk of the tree, fatally crushing him.
An investigation has been launched and Police will be working to clarify the exact order of events that led to the fatal incident over the coming days.
Sergeant Kaine Austin says "We are in the early stages of this investigation and we will be speaking to witnesses to determine exactly what has occurred. Worksafe New Zealand has been notified and will be assisting Police with our inquiries."
While a family member was present in the area when the incident occurred, Police will be working to notify the man's family ahead of releasing his name. The matter has been referred to the coroner.
