Relief for the Far North

Relief for the Far North
The persistent heavy rain and wind, which scourged the Far North for much of last week, has subsided and a more settled, if colder, week is in store for northern New Zealand. For others, a cool and at times showery southerly flow covers the country.
"A ridge of high pressure building over the Tasman Sea brings clearing skies and cold nights to many western areas, but a low to the east of the North Island keeps that damp southerly flow going for eastern areas," commented meteorologist Liz Walsh.
For the northwest of the North Island including the Bay of Plenty and also western areas of the South Island, we're looking at generally fine weather this week with frosts at night.
"It's a rather different story for districts south of Lake Taupo and eastern areas of both islands, with cloudy spells and showers. That said, the east of the South Island fares a little better than the north, with some good sunny spells featuring a bit more between those showers," Walsh went on to say.
With maximum temperatures staying in the single figures for many places from Canterbury southwards, any showers that do fall are likely to have a wintry edge, bringing sleet into the mix and snow on the hills. Watch out for those colder night-time temperatures up north too, under those clear skies.
