About 9.30am this morning police were notified that a large round object, which looked like a sea mine, was rolling around in the surf at Ruakaka Beach.
As a precaution Police notified the Bomb Disposal Unit which travelled from Auckland.
The unit found that the object was a training mine belonging to the Royal New Zealand Navy. These mines are usually full of water and are inert (i.e. not live).
Bomb Disposal Unit staff emptied the water out of the mine and it was transported to the Ruakaka Police Station. The Navy will be collecting it from the station.
