Wellington Zoo achieves carboNZero certification second year in a row
In May 2013 Wellington Zoo was the first zoo in the world to achieve carboNZeroCertTM certification, recognising the Zoo
as a global leader in sustainability – and we’re proud to have successfully achieved this certification again in 2014.
“I’m thrilled to announce that the Zoo is carboNZero certified again,” said Karen Fifield, Wellington Zoo Chief
Executive.
“Our journey to becoming the world’s first carboNZero certified zoo was a five-year undertaking, and achieving
certification again is a testament to the hard work and commitment to sustainability of all Zoo staff – and a wonderful
acknowledgment of our passion for creating a better future for our precious wildlife.”
“As part of our 2013 carboNZero certification, we made a commitment to continually work to reduce our greenhouse gas
emissions,” added Ms Fifield.
“This year the range of sustainability initiatives implemented to reduce our water usage and production of waste saw us
pass our audit once again with flying colours, and we successfully reduced our power consumption by 5% – a major
accomplishment of which we are extremely proud.”
“Conservation is at the heart of everything we do at Wellington Zoo, and this achievement shows how very seriously we
take our commitment to minimising the Zoo’s environmental impact.”
In October 2013 Ms Fifield presented a paper on Wellington Zoo’s carboNZero certification at the World Association of
Zoos and Aquariums Congress in Florida.
That same year Wellington Zoo was proud to become a member of the Sustainable Business Council, and in September won the
Sustainable 60 Marketplace award for excellence in sustainable initiatives.
About carboNZero certification
carboNZero certified organisations annually measure their organisation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions so they
understand what their impact is on the global climate. They then make a commitment to managing and reducing their GHG
emissions by creating an emissions management and reduction plan. Any remaining emissions that the organisation cannot
