Ashburton: North park road Truck V Train Serious Crash
9 July 2014 - At 8.15am on Monday 07 July 2014 A truck driven by the sole occupant travelling in a westerly direction along North Park road towards the Main South road in Ashburton has negotiated a give way controlled railway crossing.
While conducting this manoeuvre the truck has crossed the path of a south bound freight train resulting in a collision taking place. As a result of the impact the train has sustained significant frontal damage and the truck has sustained extensive overall damage.
The impact has pushed the truck off the railway line into a nearby paddock and the train has stopped some 500 metres further south along the line.
Witnesses have advised police that the truck was crossing the line and the train sounded its warning device on more than one occasion immediately prior to the collision.
Released 09 July 2014:
The driver of the truck Mr George Robert Ellis age 22 years of Hawke's Bay has died as a result of injuries he received in the crash.
His family have been notified.
The investigation into the cause of this crash continues any witnesses to this crash should contact Constable Fran Clark at the Ashburton Police Station.
