Seminar for Rotorua retailers to focus on crime prevention
Seminar for Rotorua retailers to focus on active crime prevention
Active crime prevention is the focus of a seminar for Rotorua businesses being staged next week [Thursday 3 July] by Rotorua District Council (RDC) and a number of partner organisations.
The seminar - Better Business through Active Crime Prevention - is aimed at inner city retail operators and licenced liquor outlets across Rotorua district.
The seminar’s first session will be presented by Jane Searle of Watchdog Security. Ms Searle will be covering topics such as increasing safety for staff and customers, reducing stock loss and preventing crime.
In the second session, well known Australian crime prevention expert, Tony Lake, will be sharing his experiences and knowledge of CPTED - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Mr Lake will be covering strategies for minimising offending and increasing safety by using design principles.
RDC’s Inner City Revitalisation portfolio lead, Councillor Karen Hunt, said the seminar was acknowledgement that public safety and crime were always front-of-mind issues for people visiting or working in any central city area.
“That’s why key goals identified as part of our Rotorua 2030 vision include keeping our communities safe, and building an inviting and thriving inner city.
“As a result of working closely with our local city businesses over recent months, we’re already seeing new vitality and confidence in our inner city. But we want to see more and more people coming in and enjoying a safe and vibrant environment for shopping, dining or entertainment – day and night.
“This seminar will help local businesses identify preventative action they can take to keep themselves, their staff and their customers safe; so I would urge all local retailers to attend.”
Ms Hunt said the council had been able to provide the seminar with only a minimal entrance fee because of a generous funding grant from the Ministry of Justice, and support from seminar partners Rotorua Police, Rotorua Inner City Focus Group, Neighbourhood Support and Watchdog Security.
The Better Business through Active Crime Prevention seminar is being held at Rotorua’s Energy Events Centre from 7.15am to 11am on Thursday 3 July. Breakfast will be provided as part of the seminar arrangements.
Entrance is $15 per person and people interested in attending will need to pre-register as spaces are limited. To register names and contact details should be emailed to shared.services@rdc.govt.nz.
