At about 1200 hours an unmarked Police Patrol Unit was travelling away from New Brighton on Hawke Street when a motorcyclist rode past at speed. On seeing the Police Unit it further accelerated towards Marine Parade.
The Unit went to do a U-turn when it saw the motorcyclist turn left into Marine Parade, travelling through a stop sign at speed. The Unit activated its lights and on reaching the intersection with Marine Parade, saw the motorcyclist, approx. 150 – 250 metres further down the road, just before it crashed into a vehicle that was travelling in the same direction but turning right into a car park.
The vehicle had indicated to turn right and was in the process of doing so when the motorcyclist hit the vehicle throwing the rider some 10 metres.
It has now been confirmed the male motorcyclist is deceased.
Police are currently speaking to a number of witnesses and investigating the cause of the crash as well as carrying out a review of the actions of the Police officers involved.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Christchurch police on (03) 363 7400.
Superintendent McGregor will be available for interviews at the scene at 2:00 pm.
