Whangarei firearms burglary
Police are investigating the burglary of some firearms and ammunition at a house north of Whangärei.
The burglary at a property on State Highway One at Kauri is believed to have taken place between 9am and 3pm yesterday. The owner returned home in the afternoon to find that burglars had broken into the locked gun cabinet and taken two firearms and some ammunition.
They stole a .22 rifle and a .45 lever action gun, and some boxes of .45 ammunition, .22 ammunition and 9mm ammunition. The burglars also took two white Apple Mac laptops, some cash and jewellery.
Police are asking for any information relating to the burglary and any reports of suspicious activity in the area yesterday.
Last week NZ Police joined an Australasian campaign aimed at encouraging the public to report firearms in the possession of unlicensed holders.
Northland Police Operations Manager Inspector Marty Ruth said police were concerned at the number of firearms falling into the hands of criminals and urged people to report those who held weapons without a licence.
If anyone has information relating to the burglary at Kauri they can contact the Whangärei Police on 09 430 4500 or if they wish to remain anonymous call
