Fatal Crash; Car V Horse
Emergency services have been called to a serious crash that occurred at 6.20p.m. on Hopkins Road, south of Matamata. A car, travelling towards Matamata, has struck a horse, killing it. The car travelled a distance along the road before it crashed through a driveway and into a tree where it came to a stop.
A middle aged woman who was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died as a result of the crash. Next of kin of the deceased woman were notified soon after the crash as family members lived nearby and were quick to come to the scene. At this point police will not be releasing the name of the deceased woman.
Diversions are in place at the intersection of Hopkins road and State Highway 29, and at Hopkins road and Hinuera road. Police expect that this road will be closed for 2-4 hours overnight but will reopen during the early hours of the morning. Police will be again closing the road for a period during daylight hours on 24 June to complete an examination of the scene.
