After the Storm - Northern Coromandel
The northern coast of the Coromandel was hard hit by the storm that ravished the country last week. Big Sandy Bay in
Port Charles had every property suffer flood damage.
Derek Thompson, TCDC Parks Contract Manager says "The residents are concerned about sewerage as all their septic tanks
flooded during the storm."
"The amount of damage is evident in the amount of household debris being dumped on the reserve," he added.
There is a large amount of organic debris along the road reserve and a gum tree in the Tangiaro stream blocking the flow
of water to the sea.
Port Jackson was possibly the hardest hit area, with some parts of the road requiring geotechnical and structural design
input. The bridge approximately 12.8km up the road is unlikely to be fully operational until August/September.
"In the interim we have been working closely with Waikato Regional council on a plan to construct a temporary ford
downstream of the bridge to enable vehicle access north of the stream," said Roading Manager Matt Bush.
The work on the ford has started today and is expected to be completed by Friday. The majority of the remedial works
(slips/debris removal, culvert cleaning etc.) is expected to be completed by the middle of July.
