Auckland Emergency Centre On Alert
The Auckland Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC) is activated and continues to monitor and respond to the situation.
Strong winds that have affected the Auckland region overnight and early this morning. Wind gusts around the region have exceeded predicted forecasts.
NZTA has now opened some lanes on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, gusts on the bridge peaked at 131 km/hr.
On the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, 145 km/hr winds have been recorded.
Emergency Services have responded to an excess of 600 calls from the public since midnight in relation to wind damage, including trees and power lines down.
The Auckland ECC has activated both Auckland Emergency Response Teams to assist emergency services with responding to these calls.
Power outages are widespread across the region with over 20,000 households without power at 0500 hours.
Many houses across the region have been impacted by trees. The Auckland ECC is collating these properties to ensure that occupants are provided with any assistance that may be required. In Manly (Whangaparaoa), a tree has fallen through the roof of a house injuring a child. The child has been transported to hospital with minor injuries and the Auckland ECC is supporting the family with accommodation.
At 0500 hours, the storm has passed to the south of Auckland City and should clear the region by 7am.
Auckland Council staff will undertake more detailed damage assessment this morning.
