Maori to share successes at hui
9 June 2014
A conference aimed at showcasing Māori successes and providing an opportunity for networking is being held in Rotorua
late this month.
Organised by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Te Ahurangi will enable Māori in the region to establish new
relationships and build on existing networks, providing a forum to share advice, experience and information. The theme
will be “rangatiratanga in practice”.
Bay of Plenty Maori interested in attending the hui, which will be held at Tangatarua Marae at Waiariki Institute of
Technology on Monday, 30 June, are being asked to register with the regional council.
There will be a number of keynote speakers during the day-long hui as well as workshops.
The opening speaker from Te Uru Taumatua will provide a view on rangatiratanga from a Tūhoe lens. Delegates will also
hear about the future health and wellbeing of our freshwater resources and its importance for iwi and New Zealand.
Renewable energy will be the subject of one workshop which will showcase a hapū-based project at Ōmaio and delegates
will receive an overview of the Māori economy and New Zealand’s first Māori economic development strategy, which was
recently launched in the Bay of Plenty.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to learn about Māori ocean voyaging and hear a rangatahi (young person)
perspective on participation in local government.
It is the second Māori conference hosted by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and is free. Organisers expect the full
complement of 150 attendees.
Te Ahurangi means “towards the pinnacle of the skies”.
