If your weekends are boring, help is at hand. This coming Saturday, June 14, is Police National Open Day during which time all Police districts will showcase modern policing.
Never one to miss out, Auckland City District has planned an action-packed off-site afternoon between midday and 3pm that will all unfold under The Cloud on Queen's Wharf.
"The ways in which we police have changed in keeping with environmental, community, communications and demographic changes," says District Commander Superintendent Mike Clement.
"We want to show our communities some of the tools and methods we use to prevent crime, reduce offending and try to keep people and property safe."
There'll be plenty of room for visitors of all ages to see what Auckland City has on offer, including:
• Puppies kick off the day in their 'play pen' at midday
• A 'celebrity challenge' at 12.30pm where The Edge's Dom Harvey, Mike Puru, Guy Williams and others will pit themselves against mystery Police talents doing the physical competency test (PCT)
• kids can see what running speeds they get up to by clocking their time on the road policing laser speed guns
• learn how to improve your personal and property safety by talking crime prevention with our Auckland Safety Patrollers and Neighbourhood Policing Teams
• Junior detective skills tested at the forensic centre - get your prints in ink
• At 1pm the Dog Section will be there to display their tracking and tackling skills
• Check out the latest Armed Offender Squad equipment
• If water's your thing, hook into Police launch Deodar and her little sister RHIB (the rigid hull inflatable boat)
• by midday, Eagle too will have landed on Queen's Wharf and will be parked near the district's Mobile Command Unit
"We are committed to having a country where we can all be and feel safe. We want the community to have the chance to see how we are working to achieve that," Mr Clement said.
People can also engage with NZ Police online, learn about the range of work Police is involved in and find information about Open Day events taking place around the country via www.police.govt.nz/openday or check out the district Facebook page -www.facebook.com/AucklandPolice(link is external)
"This is an exciting new era for New Zealand Police. We hope people will come along and see for themselves on June 14."
