Arbor Day tree planting for Karenga Park
More than 70 trees are being planted at Rotorua’s Koutu Youth Space at Karenga Park tomorrow (Thursday) as part of
Rotorua District Council’s contribution to Arbor Day.
The Arbor Day planting is on Thursday 5 June from 1.15pm. Karenga Park’s Youth Space features a skateboard and scooter
facility, netball/basketball court, and a family barbecue area.
Following community consultation, a variety of species has been selected for the planting event, including native,
ornamental, feijoa, citrus, plum and nut trees.
Councillor Janet Wepa, portfolio lead of the council’s Sustainable Living Strategy, said the Arbor Day planting supports
the Rotorua 2030 goal to build a resilient community and outstanding places to play.
“Arbor Day is a worldwide celebration of tree planting and Council is pleased to once again play a part in the annual
event.
“Koutu residents and school children from the area are coming along to lend a hand. The Koutu community has really taken
ownership of their youth space right from the planning stages. So we’re pleased but not at all surprised that they’re
also keen to get involved in tomorrow’s planting.
“Trees are about investing in a sustainable future - we plant a tree today for the next generation. We’ve invited our
children to come along because it’s them and their families who are going to be enjoying these trees in the years to
come.”
Cr Wepa said the council had undertaken many improvements at Karenga Park recently, including installation of a free
barbecue and additional seating, and improved drainage.
“Once Council undertakes work in the community we continue to be involved in the project. It’s not about laying the
foundations and then walking away. We’ll continue to support and work alongside the community, and listen to people’s
ideas to improve facilities.”
