Developing Biodynamic Orchards
The biodynamic method focuses not just on the commonly acknowledged material inputs, but also on the innate nature of
the land & the crops concerned. Site-appropriate solutions have been the focus for planning two small orchards on local Avondale
reserves. Harnessing the naturally available attributes of the sites as well as acknowledging the needs and assistance
of the local community have been centrepiece for the planning. It will be important to develop a thorough understanding
and appreciation of these new Biodynamic Orchard environments. Selecting suitable types of trees should lay the
foundation for an increasingly productive addition to the local Avondale environment. Preventive & proactive measures rather than dealing annually with the symptoms of unsuitable choices is core to biodynamic practice.
This will be hinged on the use of Biodynamic horn-manure and horn-silica preparations as well as the use of the compost
preparations to direct all solid and liquid fermentation processes. We do not envisage the use of agrichemicals. Inputs
like fertilisers should reflect the recommendations of the New Zealand Demeter Standard adopted as best practice guide.
Well timed activities will produce the best results.
