Wellington Open Day – traffic delays possible
The Capital opens its doors once again to locals this Sunday 25 May for Wellington Open Day, 10am–5pm – and
Wellingtonians are advised there may be traffic delays around at least two of the major attractions – the Zoo and
Zealandia.
Twenty of the city’s visitor attractions are opening their doors for residents and charity – all for a gold coin
donation.
The open day is organised by Positively Wellington Tourism to keep us in the know about what’s on in the city and where
– and to thank Wellingtonians for being great hosts when visitors arrive.
This year’s attractions and tours include entry into Zealandia, Wellington Zoo and Carter Observatory. Kids can hop on
an Our Space multimedia ride at Te Papa and those aged 5–10 can hunt for treasure at the Museum of Wellington City and
Sea, with prizes for all.
Last year, heavy traffic caused delays in Newtown and in Karori and Kelburn as thousands of people descended on the Zoo
and Zealandia. This year, the City Council stresses that people should take buses or walk to both attractions as parking
is limited.
Motorists are advised to avoid roads around Zealandia and in Newtown if they want to avoid delays.
In terms of Wellington Open Day, if you fancy something a little different:
• * take a back-of-house tour at City Gallery to see how they make exhibitions come to life
• * learn how to make mojitos at Motel Bar or cocktails at The Library bar
• * go behind-the-scenes at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre
• * have a go (16–20 year-olds) at ocean sports.
Now in its fourth year, Wellington Open Day is wildly successful with thousands of Wellingtonians turning up and tours
selling out. In 2013, over $37,000 was raised for charity.
Note that most of the tours and special activities will be first-in, first-served on the day, and some need to be
pre-booked directly with the operators.
