Makeover underway on Eruera Street intersection
Rotorua’s Eruera and Tutanekai streets intersection is the latest to get a makeover as part of local business
stakeholders’ partnership with Rotorua District Council’s to revitalise the inner city.
The works, which got underway this week, will further strengthen the pedestrian connection along Tutanekai Street and
improve the visual look of the area.
The intersection upgrade involves easier and safer crossings for pedestrians with wider median refuge islands being
constructed in the centre of the road.
In coming weeks new gardens and landscaping will be progressively undertaken on each of the four corners, along with an
irrigation system, wooden decking, and a cycle stand.
A large wooden sculpture of a native tui, carved by local artist Trevor Nathan, will be installed on the State Insurance
corner at the end of the project. The sculpture can be viewed in the meantime in the Customer Centre at the council
headquarters.
Inner City Focus Group member and CBD retailer Ron Finn said it was great to watch the city being revitalised.
“Seeing the sculptures being put in place throughout the city is exciting. I’m really pleased that the Eruera Street
intersection is next on the list as it’s a very busy intersection for those walking about the city.”
Council Inner City Revitalisation portfolio lead, Councillor Karen Hunt, is also pleased the next intersection is
getting a makeover following a recent successful upgrade of the Pukuatua Street intersection.
“These and other inner city stakeholder-led initiatives herald a very bright future for our city. Everyone is working
together and stepping up to make things happen. And people are noticing the transformation that’s taking place. The ball
is really rolling with our revitalisation programme,” said Mrs Hunt.
Contractors and council workers are expected to be finished in late June. In the meantime the council is asking
motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and patience while work on the intersection is carried out.
